TRIATHLON COMES BACK TO NANTUCKET ISLAND
March 20, 2009 — The Founders of the 2009 Nantucket Triathlon are pleased to announce that in just three (3) weeks of registration over 200 people have signed up to compete in the inaugural race. On Saturday, July 11th, 600 people will compete in the sprint triathlon on Jetties Beach on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.
Founded by Jamie Ranney, a year-round resident on the island for over 30 years, and Bill Burnett, race director of the highly successful Cohasset Triathlon, the race is expected to draw athletes from around the country. Registrations thus far have been coming from California, Florida, Colorado and from all over the Northeast. Both Ranney and Burnett graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University.
Burnett shared his enthusiasm for the race, "When Jamie approached me with this project, I immediately wanted to get involved. Nantucket offers an incredible venue for our athletes, spectators, and sponsors. I expect this race to grow year over year."
Ranney and Burnett are working hard to ensure a safe high quality event. Ranney explained, "Nantucket is an incredibly special place. We want athletes to come over to the island with their friends and families to enjoy all that the island has to offer. We are excited to have our Title Sponsor be the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority, the lifeline to islands. The Steamship plans to offer discounted ferry rates to our racers to help ease travel costs in this challenging economic environment. We will also be working with local inns and hotels to provide discounted lodging packages for racers and their families who may want to stay for more than just the race."
The race course consists of a .25 mile swim off Jetties Beach, a 13.5 mile bike course to Madaket and back, and a 3.2 mile run through quaint Nantucket streets and lanes amongst beautiful and historic homes. Individual and relay (2 or 3 person) registrations are processed online. Seasoned athletes as well as beginners are encouraged to sign up quickly before the race field sells out.
